Istanbul is loveliest in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November), when mild, clear days are perfect for walking the old city and crossing the Bosphorus — these are the most popular and most beautiful seasons. Summer is warm and lively, full of energy and long evenings, while winter is cool and quiet, the off-season that brings the lowest hotel prices and a cosy café culture among the city's mosques and museums. The shoulder months strike the best balance of pleasant weather, fewer crowds and friendlier rates.

Istanbul is wonderfully connected, and a single rechargeable Istanbulkart works across nearly everything. Trams glide through the old city past the main sights, the metro and the under-Bosphorus Marmaray line link the European and Asian sides in minutes, and a network of ferries offers the most scenic way to cross between the continents — tea in hand on the open deck. Taxis and ride-hailing fill in the rest, though in the central districts much of the city is a pleasure to explore on foot.
