Baa Atoll is the Maldives' natural wonder — the country's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to Hanifaru Bay, where each year hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks gather to feed in one of the planet's greatest marine spectacles. Around this protected jewel sit some of the Maldives' most exclusive eco-luxury resorts, on private islands of overwater villas, pristine reefs and glowing lagoons. It's the atoll for travellers who want barefoot luxury hand in hand with extraordinary nature.

Choosing your island

In Baa Atoll your island is your destination, and the choices centre on its protected waters:

  • Eco-luxury private-island resorts — exclusive islands of overwater and beach villas with spas, fine dining and a strong conservation ethos, many within reach of Hanifaru Bay; ideal for honeymoons and a nature-rich luxury escape.
  • Family-friendly luxury resorts — larger islands with pools, kids' clubs and house reefs, pairing comfort with the atoll's marine riches.
  • Local islands — inhabited islands with guesthouses offer a more affordable, authentic base near the same celebrated waters.

Each resort has its own island, beach and house reef, so you choose the style of island that fits your trip.

When to visit

Baa Atoll is a year-round destination with two distinct draws. The dry season from December to April brings the sunniest, calmest weather and the clearest water — the classic Maldives peak for beaches, snorkelling and diving. The greener season from May to November is when the magic happens at Hanifaru Bay: the southwest monsoon funnels plankton into the atoll and manta rays and whale sharks gather in huge numbers, with the spectacle peaking around June to October. This greener season is also the best value, and the water is warm all year.

Getting there & around

Baa Atoll is reached from Velana International Airport (Malé) by a scenic seaplane flight of around 30 minutes, landing right at your resort's jetty — your island arranges the transfer. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so an earlier arrival into Malé makes for an easy same-day connection. Snorkelling trips to Hanifaru Bay are run by the resorts under the marine reserve's protection rules — snorkelling only, with visitor limits — so book through your island. Otherwise everything is a short stroll on your own island, with the house reef at your villa.
