The Maldives has two seasons. The dry season runs December to April — low rain, low humidity, calm clear water, and temperatures steady around 28–30°C. This is peak: best weather, best snorkelling visibility (especially January to April), and the highest rates. Your atoll decides your transfer, your reef and your price ceiling. North and South Malé Atolls wrap around the airport, so most resorts here are a 10–60 minute speedboat ride — the obvious choice for families, late arrivals, and anyone who doesn't want a full transfer day. Ari Atoll, the largest natural atoll, is a marine-protected zone famous for whale sharks and manta rays; it holds many flagship luxury islands and usually needs a domestic flight plus speedboat or a seaplane, which suits honeymooners more than tired toddlers. Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to Hanifaru Bay, where mantas gather to feed in season — a bucket-list reef, typically reached by seaplane. The overwater villa is the Maldives postcard — a private deck over the lagoon, a ladder into the water, sometimes a glass floor panel — and it's tailor-made for honeymoons. Two adults, total privacy, the lagoon as your front garden. For families, though, an overwater villa with a toddler is a genuine safety worry: open decks and deep water at the door. Families are almost always better in a beach villa or a family villa on the sand, where children step straight onto a shallow, calm lagoon and you're not policing a ladder. Riyadh, Kuwait and most other GCC cities connect through Dubai or Doha in about 7.5–8 hours total. A free 30-day visa is issued on arrival, so there's no paperwork before you fly. The part Gulf travellers underestimate is the second leg, from the airport to the island. Near-Malé resorts use speedboats — quick, cheaper, and run day or night, which is gold when your flight lands late. Remote islands need a seaplane or a domestic flight plus boat; seaplanes only fly in daylight, can cost notably more per person, and a late arrival may mean an unplanned airport-hotel night before you fly out the next morning. Think in tiers, not fixed prices. The luxury tier (the famous overwater-villa flagships in Ari and Baa) layers seaplane transfers and premium dining on top of the room. The value tier includes newer resorts and, for the budget-minded, guesthouses on local islands (a separate, non-resort experience).
